My first book, A Chance Meeting: Intertwined Lives of American Writers and Artists is an inquiry into the nature of friendship and influence in the making of literary and artistic work. It depicts thirty-six relationships among writers, photographers, and other creators during the long century between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement, beginning with Henry James having his photograph taken by Mathew Brady, and ending with Norman Mailer and Robert Lowell in the anti-Vietnam War march on Washington. Figures include Mark Twain, Ulysses Grant, William James, W.E.B. Du Bois, Gertrude Stein, Carl Van Vechten, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Willa Cather, Marianne Moore, Joseph Cornell, Marcel Duchamp, Alfred Stieglitz, Richard Avedon and James Baldwin.
A Chance Meeting was published by Random House in 2004, by Jonathan Cape in London in 2004, by Adelphi in Milan, 2005, by New Star Press in Beijing 2009, and by Pier Meyer Verlag, Bern / Vienna in 2018. It was a Barnes and Noble Discover Book, won the PEN / Jerard Fund Award, was a finalist for the Martha Allbrand Award, was longlisted for the Guardian First Book Prize, was chosen as one of the best books of the year by the LA Times and Maureen Corrigan on NPR, and was serialized in The Guardian.
